The Guide to Reform (Timbro/Institute of Economic Affairs)
A book about how policymakers can pursue real change, achieve great results and win re-election. Every country needs reforms, and they should have a free-market direction – to increase growth, entrepreneurship and employment, as well as to improve health care and education. Though there are many obstacles – such as special interests, populist media and a general resistance to change – many countries have come far. The book describes what they did, which results it had and most of all how they did it. The book ends with a list which shows politicians how to reform successfully – and get re-elected.

What Competition Has Done For Europe (European Enterprise Institute)
French President Nicolas Sarkozy managed to erase "free and undistorted competition" from the new proposed Treaty as one of the main aims of the EU. At a press conference afterwards, he posed a rhetorical question about what competition has done for Europe. This publication shows that competition - which is the consequence of a free economy with free trade and entrepreneurship - has done very much indeed for Europe. For one thing, it is the key explanation for incomes being 14 times higher in Western Europe today compared to 1820. This boost in living standards also provided Europe with a leading role in the world. In fact, if Europe needs anything, it is more competition. This publication shows why, where and how.

Beyond the European Social Model (Open Europe)
A book that shows how European countries that have done market-oriented reform such as tax cuts and de-regulations have been more successful when it comes to growth, employment and fighting poverty. Some facts from the book are: The long-term unemployment rate is five times higher in EU-15 than in the US. The average income in Ireland 1995-2004 grew by 101 per cent, in Britain by 72 per cent, and in Sweden by 29 per cent. The income of the poorest 10 per cent grew by 79 per cent in Ireland, 59 per cent in Britain and 10 per cent in Sweden. The proportion of households with post-tax income below $ 20 000 was 42 per cent in Ireland in 1990 and 14 per cent in 2004. In Sweden, it was 17,5 per cent in 1990, in 2004 it was 19 per cent. In 1991, the EU had 71 per cent of the US productivity, in 2005 it was 62 per cent.

Så lyckas flera västeuropeiska länder med jobben (Timbro Briefing Paper, in Swedish)
A paper comparing the development of employment in EU-15 between 1995 and 2003. It shows, among other things, that the size of the labour force has decreased more in Sweden than in any other EU country. The countries that have had the biggest success in creating new jobs are Ireland, The Netherlands and Spain. Sweden is number 12. The paper also shows that the successful countries have lower tax on work, a freer labour market and lower contributions from the state to unemployed and people on sick-leave.

Development Models, Globalization and Economies (Palgrave Macmillan)
The book compares and critiques the different economic models available in today's global market place. I have written a chapter about "A New European Model". The US or Anglo-Saxon model is often portrayed as the best, yet Europe has a well-known Social Model, and Asia has enjoyed success in the past wherein the 'Asian Economic Miracle' was highly vaunted before their crash. But now Asia, especially China, is again on a roll. The book analyses how these models have influenced both regional and global development, and finally engages in discussions upon alternatives and the search for the 'grail'.

European Dawn
Western Europe is in deep trouble. Growth is low, unemployment is high, most people are dependent on the state and welfare services are falling apart. Yet most politicians defend the European Social Model. Reforms merely scratch the surface.

The state of the Union
This publication examines the progress of market-oriented reform in the EU member states, and at EU level, in 2004. Publisher is the Stockholm Network - based in London - which is a network of about 120 market-oriented think-tanks in Europe. Authors from every EU country write about the reform situation at home, in detail but yet fairly brief. This publication provides a good overview which, of course, confirms that the main market-economic reform has taken place in Eastern and Central Europe. I and Johan Norberg have written the chapter on Sweden.

Confederation of Swedish Enterprise: Long-term analysis
With colleagues Cecilia Nykvist and Fredrik Segerfeldt at the Confederation of Swedish Enterprise, I have produced this long-term analysis. It presents international and national images of society a few decades ahead with a focus on the conditions for economic development and business. For example, we mention globalisation, the new Europe, future taxes and welfare, technology, and the emerging service society.

”Sagan om välfärdens återkomst”
Big government with its high taxes and large public monopolies will fall. It is based on the same false assumptions as the planned economy and can’t last. Now, globalisation, demography, the service society and an ever more heterogeneous society will push it over the edge. In its place there will be a smaller state with lower taxes and more and better welfare services and higher prosperity. Book published at Hjalmarsson & Högberg, it can be ordered at www.hohforlag.se.

Inför euron/Behåll kronan!
Before the referendum on the Euro on the 14th of September 2003, Ursula Berge and I wrote a book. The title was “Introcuce the Euro!/Keep the Krona!” (Pocky) She wrote half, arguing for a no-vote. I wrote the other half, arguing for a yes. At the time it was quite a success and it is an interesting document of its time. Still, the perspectives and arguments are relevant. ”Människorna, marken och makten”
Every year in Sweden, 10 billion euro of the tax-payer’s money are regionally redistributed in various systems and programmes. The regions with growth lose the fruits of their efforts and regions with stagnation get dependent on government. It is a waste of money, a brake on growth and a central planning of society – therefore the regional redistribution should be abolished. In 2002, I published a book called “The People, the Power and the Land” (Timbro) with this message.

“Konflikter – problem och lösningar”
Society and Defence is probably the most important arena for debate about security policy in Sweden. Their arrangements include a large yearly conference in Sälen, several seminars and dialogue with different groups. For the education of students, I and Jan Joel Andersson of the Swedish Institute of International Affairs were assigned to write an introduction to conflicts, their causes and possible solutions. It can be ordered at www.cff.se, under “Skrifter”.

“Retorik – konsten att övertyga
During my time as a consultant and partner with the consultancy Gullers Group, I mostly worked with public affairs issues. I did, however, also speak about rhetoric and how to convince on several occasions with clients. For such use, I wrote an introduction to the topic with the basic advice. Read it here ->

Korthuset
Before the Swedish referendum on the euro, many valid and invalid arguments were put forward from both sides. In this paper for the Confederation of Swedish Enterprise, I analysed the main arguments for a “no”-vote and explained why most of them were exaggerating or were based on false facts.
During the second half of the 1990’s, it was obvious that the Social Democrat government had put an end to the period of liberalising economic reforms that the centre-right government started. In this report for the Swedish Liberal Youth Society in 1997, I analyse why such policies will lead to lower growth and higher unemployment and outline a market-liberal alternative. Read it here
